Liposuction, or lipo, is a body contouring surgery that reduces pockets of fat to create a more streamlined, proportional appearance. During the procedure, Dr. Walters suctions out excess fat tissue from frustrating areas that resist your best diet and exercise efforts.

How Much Weight Will I Lose With Liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Most people lose less than 10 pounds after a procedure. Keep in mind it is normal for swelling and fluid retention to cause fluctuations on the scale in the weeks following surgery.

Should I Get Liposuction or a Tummy Tuck?

Liposuction and tummy tuck surgery offer unique body contouring benefits:

• You should consider liposuction if your primary concern is stubborn fat, but you are happy with your skin tone.
• You should consider a tummy tuck if your primary concerns are loose, hanging skin on the abdomen and a protruding belly from stretched or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti).

How Is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is performed in an outpatient setting, typically at the AAAHC-accredited Houma Outpatient Surgery Center. You will be placed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be comfortably asleep throughout the surgery.

Dr. Walters begins by creating a punch-hole incision in the skin and inserting a cannula, a special tool that makes it easier to loosen the fatty tissue being suctioned out. After removing the targeted fat, Dr. Walters seals the small incision.

Based on the number of areas being treated, your procedure may take several hours. In our separate recovery area, your post-op nurse will assist you with managing any discomfort and look after your treated areas until you are sent home in the care of a trusted loved one.

What Is Liposuction Recovery Like?

You may need to stay at home for several weeks after liposuction, depending on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It’s typical to have bruising and swelling for 1 or 2 weeks, and you should have stitches taken out 7 to 10 days after surgery.

The most important thing to do following any surgery is to give your body time to rest and heal. When you decide to go back to your job after your surgery, you should remember to minimize stress and strenuous activity. To increase your strength and stamina, try walking and light workouts as recommended by Dr. Walters. Remember, you may notice some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take around 6 months until your new body contour and shape is complete.

What Do Liposuction Scars Look Like?

Liposuction scars are typically very small, often only millimeters long. Dr. Walters disguises these along natural body contours or in areas that are easily covered, even in swimwear. We also offer multiple therapies to minimize your scarring, including scar gel, scar sheeting, and laser treatments.

How Long Do Liposuction Results Last?

As long as you stay committed to a healthy lifestyle and avoid any major fluctuations in your weight, your results should last indefinitely. If you do gain weight, you will gain it more evenly across your body, as the fat cells that have been removed are gone for good.
